Carey House

The client, without explaining too much, asked for a house that was not a house. Our interpretation of that request was to use two things that are nonfigurative, yet still architectural components: courtyards and structure. The unavoidable reference of course, are Mies’ courtyard houses: the enclosure of an interior by a rather weak glass screen, the covering of a slab that is independent from the vertical elements and the continuity of walls from indoor to outdoor space. The limit between inside and outside is dissolved and eventually the notion of house is replaced by the production of a place.
