400 street markets on Santiago

There are approximately 400 open air markets in Santiago. Eight million people converge here on a monthly basis and 70% of the fruits and vegetables in the metropolitan region are sold here.
Currently located on busy streets, these markets will soon be forced to relocate within the city due to new laws, the new public transportation system, and the growth of supermarket chains on a neighborhood scale.
The new standards for markets create an opportunity to solidify public spaces in sectors of the city currently in need. In order for an efficient design, the spaces would have to be considered for days in which the market is not occurring. The average market has around 300 stalls and takes place twice a week. Here lies an enormous opportunity to reduce the deficit of public space if the design of the market considers the five days of the week that the space is empty.
The required paving for sanitation control, illumination and services must have a dual condition of acting as dressing rooms, walkways, of even just a shaded space that many periphery areas don’t have. The presence of light and design has an enormous potential of turning mere infrastructure into a pleasant place.

Because of the transantiago (new ubran transit program), many outdoor markets must move. Architects propose that the new spaces be “reversible.” The idea is to couple them with different activities during the week.
